Your Website Title
The title of your webpage is critical and one of the most important items that needs to be addressed. The website title should have some of the keywords that describes your product, service, and content. Even though it is possible to have a title with an infinite number of words, it is better to have only about 3 to 5 keywords in your title. To many words in the title will reduce your search engine ranking. Therefore, the following titles would not be recommended:
Marks Index
free stuff, banners, links, contests, more free stuff, stickers, pens, pencils
Mc Hugh Corporation Website
The following may be better optional titles for the above sites:
Computer Software Review and Recommendations
Free Stuff, Contests, Giveaways
Discount Computer Equipment
Less keywords are better because the spider or search engine will rank the site higher since it will rely on those keywords. Another trick is to Start off with the letter "A" or a number (1,2,3,...) in your title, this will increase your chances to get on top of the list for some search engines because some search engines list alphabetically, while others (deep search engines) go on content. It is very important that your text is formatted as HTML
Website Content
The first page of your website is very important. It is where people decide to stay and see what you have to say or leave. You don't want too many graphics on your first page because it will download slowly leading to visitors to leave. You should have some graphics that appeal to the eye but keep it to a minimum. Have around 3 or 4 different colors in the text and section off paragraphs and different topics with dividers so it doesn't seem all bunched up. Basically keep the homepage short but sweet so people can download your page quickly and get an idea of what your page is about and explore your links. REMEMBER: Not everyone has a fast modem and a good browser, and a 17 inch or larger monitor, so consider others when designing your page so it doesn't take them a long time to view your site.
The URL
The URL is the "address" of your site. If you pay the interNIC $35 a year you can have your own domain name (www.yourdomain.com). The domain name good way to get your site on the top of a search results. Engines spiders and robots also look at domain names when "scanning" your site.
Meta Tags
Keywords and Description meta tags are hidden in the html at the top or base of a web page.
In the meta tags for keywords you want to write your keywords on how people will find your site. Keep it to six words or less not repeating any of them. The meta tag for "description" will appear in the "summary" area of the search results. Putting keywords in the in the "description" will also help you in getting your page near the top of the search results. You want to do this to every page in your site. DO NOT Keyword Spam
Don't keyword spam! Keyword spamming is writing keywords multiple times at the bottom of a page so you think you will be on top of a search results...wrong! Now the search engines put you on the bottom of the list if you spam. Spamming - Very little is okay, write the words twice at maximum - and even then, don't write them next to each other. Example, if you own a hotel in Nashville, Tennessee you can write "Nashville motels hotels Tennessee Nashville motels hotels Tennessee" and the engine will not pick up that you're spamming.
