Banner Exchange Programs

Swapping banners is probably the best way to generate traffic for a new and/or small website.  There are two ways to go here, you can either trade banners with another webmaster, or you can use a banner swap service.  Trading banners is simple. You post a webmasters banner to your site, and he will post yours.  Usually, there are no traffic minimums, and as long as you continue to send some traffic to the other site, they will send some to you.  Obviously, if you site is receiving 100 hits a day through the banner, and you are only sending 2-3 visitors to their site, the webmaster may cancel the swap.

A banner swap service is a little different, as it allows you to build up your referrals based upon how many people visit your site. Typically, you will receive 1 banner impression for every two your site generates.  Meaning, if the swap banner on your site is shown to 100 visitors, you will earn 50 impressions on other sites that are members of the swap service.   The great thing here is that although the other member sites can be smaller than yours, they can also be huge!  Hundreds of major websites participate in banner swap services, your banner can show up in some pretty impressive places!  How is such a wonderful service available for no charge?  Well, because there is a 2-1 ratio for impressions, the service is able to support itself by selling advertising in the extra impression spots that are not used by members.

News Groups on the Internet

You've heard from many of our interviewees that for your site to be successful you have to know what your visitors want. Well an easy way to find out is to watch the online newsgroups. An excellent newsgroup resource is dejanews  Deja News (Now Google), at this site you can type in any subject that interests you and find appropriate newsgroups that you can either become a member of, or just check their postings from time to time. You might want to try typing in your company and/or home page and see if something pops up. Newsgroups are big and only going to get bigger, so keep your eye on it and when you see something that you can offer (whether it be something that pertains to your site, or not) be sure to post it to the group and include a signature tag with your URL. Not only will this help get the word out about your site, but it will also be a service to the group.

Newsgroup Marketing Strategies

Before the birth of the World Wide Web, online marketers relied heavily on newsgroups. Although many have slowly wandered away from this method of internet marketing, newsgroups are definitely surviving (and thriving).

Business related newsgroups continue to see a steady flow of posts, some numbering over one hundred per day. These raw numbers alone, lend support to the rationale that newsgroup marketing is worthwhile. With that said, we've decided to give you a bit of a jump start. If you're interested in trying newsgroup marketing, the following list should keep you busy for a little while but do not just start posting ads. Remember access to the newsgroups and on-line discussions can help you better target your market, determine market need, or increase your companies efficiency.

Remember the golden rule. Before posting to a newsgroup, it's a good idea to "lurk" for a while. By this, we mean read other posts for a while before actually posting to a newsgroup. Many newsgroups do not allow blatant advertising. A more tactful approach is to answer others posts with helpful information, including your "marketing signature". An effective marketing signature will tell others what you have to offer and how to contact you for more information. Keep your marketing signature to only a few lines no more than 5. Remember, if you're new to newsgroup marketing, it's always a good idea to "lurk" or read some other posts before you post to any newsgroup. Many newsgroups DO NOT accept blatant advertising. You CAN market in these newsgroups, but you must do it by posting helpful messages, marketing only with the aid of a short effective signature file. If you're not ready to spend time reading and posting to these newsgroups right now, you may want to at least consider saving the list for future use. Although the world may not beat a path to your offer, newsgroup marketing is relatively free. When used regularly, it can become an integral part of your online marketing campaign. Do not spam newsgroups or newsgroup readers - YOU and Your business will pay the price.
